Life After Resurrection

I love Easter Sunday in worship. The music is beautiful and uplifting. The church is full with members and visitors. All the flowers make for a beautiful sanctuary. Having that time in our service when so many people come forward to sing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah with our choir is just soul-stirring. And in our church this year, we had the tremendous bonus of having that wonderful liturgical art piece appear for the first time on Easter Sunday morning. Easter, and the worship service that Sunday morning, is inspiring to me.

But then what? We don’t live on Easter Sunday every day. Once Easter is past, do things simply revert to the same old world? Or does the fact that Jesus was raised from death change things for us? John Buchanan is the editor of Christian Century Magazine and the former Senior Pastor at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. He wrote an editorial in the April 18, 2012 issue of Christian Century which touched on these questions. The following is part of what he said.

May is "Sustainable Travel to Worship" Month

Each year for the last several years, we, along with other faith communities in Madison and Dane County, have participated in “Sustainable Travel to Worship” month during May. We have encouraged all of us to travel to worship in a more “energy-sustainable” manner than we usually do, in an effort to model behavior that can cut down on petroleum use and environmental pollution. This year, we will be participating in this program once again.

Week of April 14

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and we shall be created. And, You shall renew the face of the earth.

O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy Your consolations. Amen.

Easter Sunday

O God of new beginnings, we rejoice that through your love, Christ has risen from the dead. Now we know that neither trouble nor persecution, hardship nor poverty, danger nor death can separate us from your love. Free us to live in the confidence that we are always your children.

In the resurrection, you were victorious over sin, violence and oppression. Free us to risk ourselves in the struggle for justice and peace.

In the resurrection, you have opened the gates of eternal life. Free us from the fear of death, that we may live and serve you with courage.

In the resurrection, you bring new possibilities out of hopelessness. Free us from all despair, that we might bring your hope to those who have lost heart.

Draw us into your community of freedom, hope and love, O God. Work your new creation among us, that we may love you without hesitation, and serve you without fear.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our risen Savior.  Amen.

Week of April 1-7

God of Grace and Glory, we come singing with palms and praises, knowing that our efforts to be faithful to You at times fall short. We, like the disciples of Jesus’ day, will at times run away, betray and deny Jesus. We seek Your guidance in our lives to be more authentic, more true to You, so that we might share Your love with the world in a way that the world will know it is from You. All too often, we wrap up Your gift of love in our own expectations and demands, to where Your gift of love may seem too great a burden to others. Peel off the layers that we hide You in, God, and guide us into living Your love faithfully in this world. Amen.

Holy Week Worship

In the worship services from Palm Sunday through Easter, we will remember and think about some of the events in Jesus’ life during this period we call Holy Week.  We hope you will join us regularly for worship during this very special week in the life of the church of Jesus Christ.
